1 & 2 Samuel are Old Testament narrative books focusing on a time of Israel’s history as they transition from the
period of the Judges to the Kings. We are introduced to three main characters in these two books. First, we
have Samuel, Israel’s last judge (1 Sam. 1-12). The people reject God as their king and demand to have a king
like all the nations around them, so the Lord gives them Saul. We quickly see the rise and fall of King Saul (1
Sam. 9-31). Third, we meet David, the King after God’s Own Heart (1 Samuel 16 – 2 Samuel). The Melodic line
of these books is that God is our King forever. Though we reject him as king, he gives us a king after his own
heart pointing to the coming of the eternal king, our Lord Jesus Christ.
